Greene Futbol Club (GFC) is a local travel soccer club that operates independently of other regional soccer clubs and organizations. We are part of the Virginia Premier Soccer League (VPSL) and compete in the National Premier League's (NPL) Western Division.
The Goal of GFC is to foster a competitive soccer environment and to build youth soccer players in preparation for high school or collegiate level play.
All games are played in the state of Virginia. There are no out of state games. The actual location of matches are dependent on what other teams are in the division. Generally, games have occurred as far south as Christiansburg and as far north as Clarke County. But many of the away games are in nearby counties such as Louisa, Orange, Albemarle and Nelson. It really just depends on which clubs are able to field teams in any given division.
Half of the seasons games require travel, while the other half are played locally in Greene County. There are typically 8 games in a season, so usually travel is only required for 4 of those 8 games.
The club also participates in a tournament in the fall and sometimes in the spring. Travel for tournaments will depend on where the tournament is being held.
Because our club is volunteer based, we have little overhead expenses, which keeps our costs very reasonable for travel soccer. Historically, seasonal dues have been less than $300 per season. You'll find that this is significantly lower than the larger clubs, simply because we do not have paid staff. This cost covers things like team registration fees, player registration fees, tournament entry costs, referees and many other incidental costs such as paint for line marking, training equipment, background checks for coaches, etc.
In addition to the seasonal fees, uniforms are generally around $115 per set (two jerseys, one pair of shorts and one pair of socks) but usually jerseys can be worn for multiple seasons or until they are outgrown.
Practices occur twice a week, in the evenings, between Monday through Thursday and run for an hour and a half. The coach for each team will determine the actual day and time based on their schedule and field availability, in coordination with the other coaches/teams.
Our age groups are largely dependent on how many players show up within each age group. Historically, the youngest age group has been U12 and the oldest age group has been U18. Each age group is determined by the player's birth year. Click here for the current years age groups.
Our club is comprised of 5 board members (President, Vice President, Parent Representative, Girls Team Representative, and Boys Team Representative). Additionally, we have two non-board positions, or officers (Treasurer and Operations Manager). The board is expected to play an active role in assisting with season-to-season requirements to support the club, as well as voting on key matters like financial expenditures, standard operating procedures, supporting our coaches, and communicating with parents.
Each team typically has a head coach and an assistant coach. Both coaches are required to pass a background check and required to complete training courses appropriate for any adult working with youth. Additionally, the club strongly encourages coaches to participate in the US Soccer coaches training and obtain the Grass Roots coaching certification for the age group they will be coaching.
Each team is also encouraged to appoint a Team Manager that assists the coaches with seasonal efforts such as communicating with parents, coordinating snacks, and serving as a liaison to other teams for upcoming matches.
