About Our Club
Greene FC (GFC) is proud to serve as the premier travel soccer organization for Greene County and our neighboring communities. As members of the Virginia Premier Soccer League (VPSL) and competitors within the National Premier League (NPL) or NPL West, we provide a robust and competitive platform for young athletes. Our primary goal at GFC is to cultivate a challenging and supportive environment where players can develop their skills and understanding of the game. We are dedicated to preparing our athletes for the demands of high school and, ultimately, collegiate level soccer, fostering not only their athletic abilities but also their character and teamwork. We are committed to providing your child with the highest level of coaching and a pathway to achieve their soccer aspirations.
Travel Expectations
Understanding the commitment involved in travel soccer is important, and I want to outline our typical game schedule for GFC. All of our regular season league games are played within the state of Virginia. The specific locations of away matches vary each season depending on the composition of teams within each division. While past seasons have seen travel ranging from Christiansburg to Clarke County, many away games are often scheduled in neighboring counties such as Louisa, Orange, Albemarle, and Nelson. Generally, half of our eight-game season will be played locally in Greene County, with the remaining four games requiring travel. In addition to league play, GFC participates in a fall tournament and occasionally a spring tournament. Travel for these events will depend on the host location. We aim to provide a competitive playing experience while being mindful of the travel involved for our families
Practice and Games
Regarding our team practices, GFC teams typically train twice per week in the evenings, scheduled between Monday and Thursday. These sessions are designed to be an hour and a half in duration, providing ample time for skill development and team cohesion. The specific days and times for each team’s practices are determined by the individual coach, taking into consideration their schedule and field availability, and are coordinated with other GFC teams to optimize field usage. We strive to establish consistent practice schedules once teams are formed and coaching assignments are finalized.
Age Groups
Age groups at GFC are primarily determined by the number of registered players within each birth year. Historically, we have typically fielded teams ranging from the U12 to the U18 age groups. The specific age group for each player is based on their year of birth, aligning with standard youth soccer guidelines. As registration numbers fluctuate each season, the final composition of our age groups will be determined based on the players who register. We aim to create appropriate and competitive team environments for all participating athletes. Click here for the current years age groups.
Coaches and Team Manager
At GFC, the safety and development of our players are paramount, which is reflected in our coaching standards. Each of our teams is typically led by a dedicated head coach and an assistant coach. To ensure the well-being of our athletes, all coaches are required to undergo thorough background checks and complete mandatory training courses relevant to working with youth. Furthermore, GFC strongly encourages our coaching staff to pursue additional professional development through the US Soccer coaching education pathway, including obtaining the Grass Roots certification specific to the age group they are coaching. To further support team operations, each team is also encouraged to appoint a volunteer Team Manager. This vital role assists the coaching staff with essential seasonal tasks such as parent communication, snack coordination, and serving as a point of contact with opposing teams regarding match logistics. We believe this structure provides a well-supported and positive environment for all our players.
